The launch of the Electronic Cross-border Health Services in Cyprus was announced at a special event held on 16 May 2025, at the Hall of the Presidential Palace. This initiative aims to improve access to quality healthcare services and strengthen cross-border cooperation within the European Union. <\/p>\n
Cyprus is now the 16th member-state, and the 8th<\/sup> to provide all services, <\/strong>which is part of the European infrastructure “Health@EU” \/ “MyHealth@EU”,<\/strong> allowing its citizens to have safe and immediate access to basic health services, regardless of the EU country they are in.<\/p>\n In his address, the Minister of Health, Michael Damianos<\/strong>, representing the President of the Republic<\/strong>, stressed that “Health is a fundamental right for every citizen and as such must be protected and strengthened”. He also underlined that “the Electronic Health Record that will be created for every citizen will ensure access to complete and accurate medical data at any time and anywhere in the country. The ability to interface with EU member states will further enhance cooperation and data exchange to provide better care for patients.” <\/p>\n The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National e-Health Authority (NAHI), Professor Konstantinos Pattichis<\/strong>, noted that “the services have already been put into pilot operation and will be available to the general public in June”. He stressed that this is “a historic step for healthcare in Cyprus”, ensuring that citizens will have full control of their medical data wherever they are in the EU.<\/p>\n What services will be available?<\/strong><\/p>\n In the first phase of implementation, the eHealth cross-border services will include two main services:<\/p>\n In a second phase, new electronic services such as medical imaging reports, laboratory reports and hospital discharge reports will be added. These services will be accessible throughout the European Union, enhancing the provision of high quality medical care in every corner of Europe. <\/p>\n Professor Konstantinos Pattichis<\/strong> also pointed out that “every European citizen, regardless of his\/her country of residence, will feel more secure thanks to the Electronic Cross-border Health Services, especially in cases of illness or emergency”.<\/p>\n The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemus Damianos<\/strong>, stressed that “the use of technology in the health sector is not a choice, but a necessity of our time. In an environment of rapid technological developments, where artificial intelligence and innovation are reshaping entire sectors, health cannot be left behind.” Our goal, he said, “is to ensure that every citizen has equal access to quality health care, even when they are outside our borders – that is why we are investing in solutions that transcend geographical and functional borders. Solutions that are digital and innovative.” <\/p>\n In his address the President of the Pancyprian Medical Association, Dr. Petros Agathangelou <\/strong>, read by P<\/strong>President of the Nicosia-Keryneia Medical Association “Hippocrates”, Dr. George Miliadous <\/strong> said that “active participation in the consultations as well as in today’s signature confirms our commitment and common will to make health an integrated and interconnected service for every citizen. As a medical community, we must ensure that the use of these tools is done with respect for privacy, medical responsibility and the individual.”<\/p>\n The President of the Pharmaceutical Association, Plutarchos Georgiadis<\/strong>, referred to the benefits for pharmacists, stressing that “Electronic Cross-border Health Services are not just a technological development, but a tool to strengthen our role. It is an important step towards the European integration of pharmaceutical care and a unique opportunity for pharmacists to actively contribute to ensuring public health with speed, accuracy and accountability”.<\/p>\n The President of the Cyprus Federation of Patients’ Associations (CPAA), Haralambos Papadopoulos<\/strong>, stressed that “patient access to their medical data and the possibility of their utilization are, for the CPAA, an integral element of a modern, patient-centered approach”. He also stressed that “the Electronic Health Record of the Citizen enhances autonomy, ensures safety in care and supports continuity in the health services provided”. <\/p>\n During the event, a Protocol of Cooperation and Validation of the content of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) was signed between the National e-Health Authority (NHEA), the Pancyprian Medical Association (PHA) and the Federation of Cyprus Patients’ Associations (CPA).<\/p>\n The purpose of the Protocol is to ensure common agreement on the content, management and validation of the EHR, with a view to ensuring the accuracy, completeness and protection of personal Health data.
